What happens when a wastewater sample is not representative?

If wastewater changes throughout the day, a single grab sample may not reflect the actual load. The resulting system may be undersized, oversized or based on the wrong process.

When should composite sampling be considered?

Time-based variation matters when production shifts, cleaning streams arrive at specific hours or processes operate in sequence. Under suitable conditions, a composite sample gives a more representative picture.

Is COD alone enough?

Usually not. Suspended solids, pH, oil and grease, nitrogen, phosphorus, temperature and process-specific pollutants may also need assessment. The facility’s activity determines the required parameters.

Why do site observations matter?

Knowing where and when a sample was taken gives context to the laboratory result. An analysis report becomes more useful when it is paired with field notes.
